As a
child I would stand in front of old masters paintings in the Chicago Art Institute,
captivated and excited, knowing I had to be an artist. Many hours of class room time were
spent drawing the faces of my classmates, mesmerized by the uniqueness of each face,
rather than on the academics of grade school.
I have been creating art for as long as I can remember and have used and experimented with
almost every medium in my painting and sculpture. The last 12 years my concentration
has been on oils and mixed media to express the passion I feel about my subjects...and the
subjects are mostly people. I am absorbed with the potential of faces and figures
and all the emotion and language they express.
Landscapes are lovely, usually soothing and often beautiful, but I don't want to paint
them. My fascination is human expression, the message of the soul caught in the
eyes, stance or angle of the head. I can stand in front of a Larry Rivers painting
feeling so much response that tears come to my eyes.
I don't have to know who the person is that I am painting, but by the time I am finished,
I have become intimate with them. How much can one human know about another? Study
the science of the face! What can be more important than human communication? My
subjects are usually friends, family or acquaintances or the people I encounter as I
travel this life's journey. I invite the viewer to participate in the experience of
their own possibility in my work.
